Geoffrey Cooper Sculpture
Direct Stone Carving
Welcome to my studio. For me, sculpture is an exploration of shape and form.
My favorite stones to work with are Alabaster and Albarene. Using timeless manual techniques (hammer, chisel, stone), I create works of art that seek to express the inner essence of each piece. It is a slow process, as I start with no preconception but rather break away outer layers until the inner nature of each piece is revealed. I never fail to be surprised at what is in each work, and the twists and turns of the creative process add life and meaning to the stone.
In the end, each unique piece is durable for millennia.

"Sentinel #1" Alabaster I found that it was a playful house guardian inside this stone. It watches over a point of entry into the house such as a doorway, fireplace or window, and keeps good spirits in the house while forming a barrier to bad ones.

Sentinel #2. This work in albarene revealed itself to be an ancient warrior bird guardian. It is a house guardian that is most concerned with warding off evil spirits. She demands respect, is always serious and is ruthlessly effective in protecting the dwelling’s inhabitants.

This playful abstract work in beautiful Colorado alabaster is the most playful of the sentinel sculptures. “Sentinel #3”. Has a smooth inviting surface and has a number of spirit wells where guardian spirits can rest and restore their energy levels after having been on patrol. Rather than preventing incursion of evil entities, this friendly sentinel is all about attracting and nurturing friendly spirits.

“Easter Island”. Material thought to be albarene. This stone refused to reveal much of itself. It has an old soul, stands watch, but does not extend itself to communicate in any way. Perhaps it just stands watch, or perhaps it is a message of warning. It refused to allow itself to be carved deeper or to reveal more of itself. The carvings are superficial and this may be because the imprint of the ancient meaning in the rock is so faded.
